Russia and Pakistan Agree to Build a New Steel Mill on PSM Land in Karachi

The largest industrial complex in Pakistan, Pakistan Steel Mills was founded in the 1970s with Russian assistance and contributed significantly to the development of the nation’s infrastructure and industry. However, corruption, poor management, and shifting economic policies eventually caused the company to decline. Nonetheless, the nation needs a steel mill that uses cutting-edge technology, and it is encouraging that the negotiations between Russia and Pakistan to build a new steel mill in Karachi, which started in recent years, are moving forward.

The idea of building a new steel mill in Pakistan was first discussed a year ago during a meeting between the President of Pakistan and Russian officials. In September of last year, the Russian Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce and the Federal Minister of Industry and Production decided to form a working group on the subject, and yesterday, the Prime Minister’s Advisor on Industry and Production and a member of the Russian delegation decided to build a new steel mill in Karachi. According to Russian authorities, the government has chosen to set aside 700 acres of Pakistan Steel Mills property for the construction of a new steel factory.

Note that Pakistan needs to import $2.7 billion worth of iron and steel per year to meet its needs, despite having reserves of 1.887 billion tons of iron ore, according to a conservative estimate. These facts make the necessity and significance of building a new steel mill abundantly clear. However, in light of past experiences, it is imperative to protect the new steel mill’s operations from corruption and poor management, which can only be achieved if transparency and merit are guaranteed at every turn from the beginning.
